Reggie Watts

reggie watts

Buy Tickets Now!

Doors 7:30pm. Show 8:30pm.

As an avowed “disinformationist,” Reggie Watts loves to disorientate his audiences in the most entertaining way. His style is unpredictable and you might not know what to expect, but you’re in good company- he doesn’t either. Watts feeds off of the crowd, creating improvised musical sets using his voice and a looping machine. Watts is a renaissance man, renowned as a musician, comedian, improvisor and vocalist. He’s received critical acclaim from some of the nation’s greatest—ranging from Rolling Stone to Conan O’Brien to SPIN—and recently completed a sold out solo headlining tour of the US.

Musically, he’s lent his pipes to Regina Spektor’s “Dance Anthem of the 80s”, contributed two tracks to DFA Records’ Spaghetti Circus, fronted Seattle rock outfit Maktub,  recorded original music featured on Louis CK’s show on FX, and performed the theme song for Kristin Schaal’s “Penelope Princess of Pets” show.

Star Slinger / The Hood Internet / Chrissy Murderbot

Doors 10pm | Show 10:30pm

In April of 2010, after reigniting his love for record-shopping in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, Darren Williams tipped his hat to BT Express’ instrumental b-side, “Cowboy Dancer” and assumed the moniker of Star Slinger for his electronic project. By June 2010, Williams had pieced together his first LP, “Volume 1”. Some tracks were reportedly made in the comfort of his own bed in the early hours of the morning, while others were made not long after waking. Williams believes that routine and weekend culture aren’t his forte, and creating music at any given moment is how he approaches the writing process.

Meanwhile that summer, Williams began collaborating with ambient producer Teams (Knoxville, TN). Together they worked on an EP, sending stems via Soundcloud and were approached shortly thereafter by the popular Brooklyn-based label Mexican Summer to release a 12” as Teams vs. Star Slinger. The self-titled EP was released in early 2011 to much acclaim and kick-started the long queue of artists looking to make use of his remixing and production talents.

Before that, Small Black had championed his remix of their song “Photojournalist”, while the blogosphere championed his unofficial remix of Deerhunter’s “Helicopter” and has since been approached for official remix work from some of his longtime favorite bands, including Air France, Toro Y Moi, Gold Panda, Broken Social Scene, The Morning Benders, The Go! Team, Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks, Foster The People, Alex Winston and Childish Gambino.

These remixes and other production work kept him busy in the studio throughout 2011. Outside of the studio he flourished by playing his huge hip hop and dance-oriented sets to festivals across Europe, such as The Big Chill, Benicassim, and Glastonbury, as well as touring with Washed Out, Memory Tapes, the Go! Team, Caribou, and Battles.

Most recently Star Slinger produced the new Air France single, which went big with Hype Machine, Pitchfork, Stereogum and Fact, adding another notch in his belt as an accomplished producer.

Setting the stage on fire first will be The Hood Internet, a Chicago-based duo comprising Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV, pronounced “Steve Sleeve”) that specializes in mash-ups between hip hop and indie rock music. Start working on your head nod, brah.

Leah Lou & The Two Left Shoes / Nights / These Knees / Between State Lines

Doors 7:30pm | Show 8:30pm

Leah Lou and the Two Left Shoes brings to mind the quirky edginess of Regina Spektor or Lily Allen, fellow female artists that brazenly speak their mind. The “band” is a duo comprising Leah Lou and Daniel Lee, who play guitars as well as a slew of foot-mounted percussive devices, a wooden box, a plastic garbage can rigged with a kick pedal (and adorned with duct tape flowers), a Glockenspiel, loop pedal and a keyboard. Really, they’re going to use whatever they please and you’ll like it, too.

With songs that skirt the issues of difficult love and failed relationships, Leah Lou will capture your attention with her voice that is as sweet as honey and edgy, unapologetic lyrics utilizing a vocabulary only a sailor could love.

Don’t worry, there’s a swear jar on stage for that.

GHOSTWRITER / Shouting Thomas Torment / The Lake Effect / Pelagheyia

Buy Tickets Now!

Doors 7:30pm. Show 8:30pm.

When you think of a troubadour, I’m sure you think of a man with a guitar traveling cross-country singing of a love unrequited. Well, wake up. Troubadours come in many forms. Take for instance, Steve Schecter, better known as Ghostwriter, who claims the title of being the original punk-rock troubadour. Armed with his homemade foot-percussive device and a hollow-bodied guitar, Schecter has been touring the country as a one-man powerhouse.

In the last decade he’s opened for the likes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, T-Model Ford, and the Legendary Shack Shakers. He’s also played a series of festivals, from Texas to London. Last fall, Ghostwriter released his sixth studio album, Praying all the Time.

Straight out of Flushing, Queens, Action Bronson is set to take over the rap game the old school way. His debut studio album, “Dr. Lecter,” released in March of 2011, burst Action Bronson onto the hip-hop map.

The Devil Makes Three / Phillip Roebuck / Chardon Polka Band

devilmakesthree

Buy Tickets Now!

Doors 8pm | Show 9pm

Proving that music can be driven and rhythmic without a drummer, acoustic three-piece The Devil Makes Three embraces elements of true Americana with its blend of influences stemming from ragtime, country, folk and a dash of rockabilly. Their music could be called folk punk, if you absolutely had to categorize such a splendor.

“We play mainly rock venues where it’s not seated,” Pete explains. “Everybody dances. And except for the instrumentation and the fact that we don’t have a drummer, it’s pretty much like a rock gig. It can get pretty crazy, people are dancing and drinking and yelling. And that’s the way we like it.”

Their sound lives through three-part harmony and quick changing guitar and banjo lines. Throw in an upright bass and you know you’re going to be in for a good time. It’s hard to believe this sound comes from a trio of transplants that call California home. So grab a shot of bourbon at the bar (or four, so that you can share with the band) and get ready to kick up your boots. We dare you not to tap your toe at this show.
